INT 303 - Fine Arts and Early Learning
The Arts and Sciences Curriculum Committee is sympathetic toward the Childhood and Early Childhood Education Departments position of trying to meet State Education guidelines and allowing students to graduate in four years; however, we are unable to support the new course proposal for INT 303. The committee voted 5-0 to not approve the course. The reasons for disapproval are listed below:
1) The committee feels that interdisciplinary (INT) courses should be open to all students on campus, not just majors from the School of Education. As proposed, the course doesnt appear to meet the spirit of an interdisciplinary course; perhaps an EDU prefix would be more appropriate.
2) The committee underscores the concerns of the Chair of the Performing Arts Department as to whether the course content provides sufficient depth in the discipline.
3) The use of the word Fine in the title Fine Arts and Early Learning is inconsistent with the course content as the performing arts have a greater component than the visual arts. The committee feels the title The Arts and Early Learning better reflects the course content.
4) Although there is some communication between the Chairs of the Art and Art History and Performing Arts Departments and the Childhood and Early Childhood Education Department,
the committee would have liked to have seen greater collaboration between all three departments in the development and institutionalization of this course.
5) The committee would like to see the names of specific Art and Art History faculty and Performing Arts faculty on the list of probable instructors, rather than To Be Determined. Have the Art and Art History and Performing Arts Departments indicated they have faculty interested in teaching the course? Similarly, in item 8 of the new course proposal form, it is unclear who are educational technology faculty.
6) The course has a significant developmental psychology component yet there is no commentary from the PSY department.
